In Austin, the state’s first hydrogen fueling station is providing fuel for a 22-passenger fuel cell transit bus. Participants in the workshop will have the opportunity to ride the bus and tour the hydrogen fueling station.

The workshop is presented as part of a national effort by the U.S. Department of Energy to increase hydrogen knowledge among state and local leaders. The Houston Advanced Research Center and the Texas H2 Coalition are conducting the workshops at five key locations in the state.

Who Should Attend
Anyone involved in or considering involvement in developing, buying or financing renewable energy generation within the competitive wholesale and retail markets of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), the intrastate grid serving 85% of the electric load in Texas.

Overview
Top Texas experts and key players will provide an understanding of the special circumstances of developing renewable electric generation in the intrastate ERCOT grid in Texas, emphasizing the political climate, philosophy of government, regulatory approach and competitive retail and wholesale electric markets, as factors creating the spectacular growth of renewable generation since the Legislature launched unbundled competitive electric markets in 1999.

Texas has a business and political climate friendly to the development of independent generation with minimal permit requirements for new generation and a robust transmission system that is significantly expanding its transmission grid without cost to generators to accommodate the rapid expansion of wind energy in West Texas, as well as solar and biomass generation throughout ERCOT. The State’s robust economic growth continues to create a need to add new generating capacity in a competitive wholesale electric market primarily composed of non-utility independent generating entities. Unique markets and regulatory systems create a need for a different approach to renewable energy development, financing and commercial operation.

Course Highlights

  • What Makes the Restructured Texas Electric Industry in ERCOT the Nation’s Leader in Renewable Energy?
    - Bob Webb, General Counsel, Biofuels Power Corporation
  • Delivering the Goods— CREZ Transmission and Integrating Intermittent Electric Generation

Clean Energy Venture Summit

14-15 October 2009
AT&T Conference Center
Austin, TX

Austin Energy and the Clean Energy Incubator are proud to announce the third annual Clean Energy Venture Summit, “Bringing the Smart Grid to Life” on October 14 -15, 2009 at the AT&T Conference Center in Austin, Texas. This summit provides clean energy technology companies and entrepreneurs a venue for presenting their innovations to venture capitalists, angel investors and strategic investors that currently invest in clean energy, along with experts from Austin Energy, corporate partners, utility executives and government leaders.

This year’s theme “Bringing the Smart Grid to Life” directly relates to efforts from the Pecan Street Project. The Pecan Street Project (PSP) is Austin’s city-wide clean energy laboratory, the largest in the nation, and the only place where researchers and entrepreneurs can come to develop, test and implement the smart grid.

The mission of the Pecan Street Project is to establish the city of Austin as America's clean energy laboratory. It is the most aggresive smart grid program in the nation with:

  • 300 megawatts of distributed generation
  • 320,000 smart meters
  • Unique regulatory flexibility of ERCOT, the Texas Grid
  • Utility participation
  • Private sector technology expertise in Austin

The Summit is a place where clean energy innovations targeting the key PSP focus areas will connect with investors and prospective customers. Start-up and growth stage companies through Series B funding enter the business venture competition for a unique opportunity to present their technology innovation, business plan and environmental impact to a distinguished panel of PSP corporate partners, private investors, media, and industry experts.

The competition will focus on enabling technology in five areas:

  • Distributed generation and renewable energy
  • Energy efficiency
  • Storage and transportation
  • Demand management
  • Other smart grid

Competitors may enter any component that supports and promotes advances in these key areas. Companies will compete in their individual focus area flights, and finalists in each area will present in front of a general session for best in show. Judges will evaluate entries based on innovation, overall market opportunity, stage of development, IP position, resource requirements, environmental impact and potential ROI.

Building upon the success of previous summits, we anticipate over 400 attendees. The grand prize includes a full range of in-kind services. All top five finalists will receive the opportunity for an interview with Austin Energy and Brewster McCracken of the Pecan Street Project. The overall winner will also receive membership to the Austin Technology Incubator, a three-month public relations package from Mercom Capital, deferred legal fees, and a financial and IT package. All entrants will benefit from invaluable exposure and insider guidance.
